As simple as the form of the traditional Javanese joglo is, transforming it into a liveable, fresh and functional space while respecting the integrity of the 100+ year old teak structure is always a challenge. We took the entire joglo apart and reconfigured it adding carved panels from another Eastern Javanese structure to create a closeable bedroom. The rest of the joglo remains open… a kind of a a loft meets joglo. .Then we added function: a spacious kitchen complete with a pantry. and the essential element for minimal life living, a walk-in closet. Every piece of wood was reused. Discarded tiles were purchased from numerous tile making workshops to create a collage of tile in the bathroom. One Bedroom, One Bath. 110 meters square.
